Hyundai E&C Holds Safety Workshop with Partner Companies to Stamp Out Serious Accidents

Hyundai E&C is taking steps to devise rigorous on-site safety management and response measures in collaboration with its partner companies to root out the threat of serious accidents.

On Friday, November 12th, Hyundai E&C held the Hyundai E&C Safety Workshop 2025 at the main auditorium of its Gye-dong headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The workshop was attended by key executives, including Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-woo, and top management from over 250 partner companies across all work disciplines. They engaged in extensive discussions on topics such as ▲government industrial safety and health policies and the current state of Hyundai E&C's safety and health management, ▲a paradigm shift in safety through expanded participation by all stakeholders, ▲measures to strengthen the management of high-risk work, and ▲a construction safety forum for each work discipline.

As this event was planned to provide a forum for a wide range of voices from the field and to derive site-customized safety response measures, separate on-site and off-site preliminary group discussions with over 300 partner companies were held for about two weeks prior to the workshop. Hyundai E&C anticipates that a more specific and highly effective set of safety measures will be forthcoming, given that in-depth, discipline-specific discussions centered on working-level staff were held and a variety of improvement measures were proposed.

In his welcoming address, Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-woo requested the active participation of all Hyundai E&C employees and partner companies, stating, “Hyundai E&C has put in place an emergency safety system to fundamentally prevent industrial site accidents, now deemed a national emergency, and active cooperation and action by our partner companies are essential for this endeavor.” He added, “We will closely review the diverse proposals that have emerged from the collective intelligence based on the extensive practical experience of our partner companies to further bolster safety levels at construction sites and to maintain the trust of our customers and uphold our social responsibilities.”

Hyundai E&C has established an emergency safety system and is engaged in robust on-site management at over 130 of its domestic sites throughout Korea where construction is ongoing. Accordingly, a Hyundai E&C manager is now required to be present for high-risk work with an correspondingly high rate of accidents, and the company’s Safety Monitoring Team has also been strengthened through the allocation of 105 new team members, expanding the number of on-site safety personnel to over 2,500. Additionally, safety measures for 22 high-risk work disciplines have been established, and targeted monitoring has been further reinforced.

Safety equipment and safety systems have also been augmented. To prevent falling objects from causing accidents, the company has introduced upgraded safety helmets with shock absorption that is about 40% greater than the current standard. At some sites, it is also distributing smart safety equipment for worker protection, such as smart bands that monitor workers' body temperatures and heart rates in real-time, body cams that can record on-site conditions in real-time, and airbag safety vests.

The company is also concentrating its efforts on creating an environment that enhances workers' safety awareness. It is promoting a heightened safety consciousness by distributing a QR-Code Recognition Education Program (‘Time-Out Talk’), available in 22 languages, which allows work to be stopped and workers to be immediately removed (dubbed the ‘OUT SYSTEM’) from the site and given corrective training if abnormal activity is detected. The company is also focused on spreading a culture of safety in which workers participate voluntarily, such as by mandating 'Safety Awareness Reminder Break' every hour to help workers maintain concentration.

Hyundai E&C plans to do its utmost to create a safe workplace for its workers, not only by leading a paradigm shift in the construction industry's safety practices through in-depth on-site responses via a triangle of cooperation between the head office, partner companies, and the actual construction sites, but also by concentrating its efforts on establishing a voluntary culture where workers at the site can identify and respond to risks individually.
