Hyundai E&C Establishes an Emergency Medical Support System Utilizing Medevac Helicopters with Andong Hospital

Hyundai E&C is establishing a site-customized emergency medical support system to enhance safety at its construction sites.

Hyundai E&C announced that on Friday, November 23rd, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Emergency Medical Support with the Gyeongbuk Regional Trauma Center at Andong Hospital, located in Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Im Byeong-cheon, Head of the Safety Planning Office at Hyundai E&C; Chae Jin-seok, Head of the Nuclear Power Business Office at Hyundai E&C; Shin Dal-won, the lead site manager; and Lee Hak-ki, Chief of Medical Services at Andong Hospital, along with principal figures from the Shin-Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 construction site and Andong Hospital.

Through this agreement, Hyundai E&C has established a medical hotline between its Shin-Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 site (in Uljin, Gyeongbuk Province) and Andong Hospital, and has put in place a specialized system that can respond to critical medical emergencies, such as trauma and cerebro-cardiovascular diseases, using medevac helicopters.

The Shin-Hanul Units 3 & 4 project, in which Hyundai E&C is participating as the lead construction manager, is a venture to construct two 1,400MW-class nuclear power plants in the Buk-myeon area of Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk Province. It is the largest nuclear power plant construction site in Korea, with a maximum of approximately 4,000 workers on-site daily.

In addition, to proactively prepare for emergencies that may occur on-site, Hyundai E&C operates a fire and medical unit and an emergency room, and has permanently stationed medical and firefighting specialists, including nurses, emergency medical technicians, and firefighters, to ensure a swift initial response and to ensure the safety of its workers.

A Hyundai E&C official noted, “The lives and safety of our workers are core values that the company must protect above all else.” The official added, “With this agreement as a foundation, we will establish a practical response system that makes the best possible use of the golden hour in a crisis, and we will continue to advance a safety management system designed for construction sites.”

Earlier this year, Hyundai E&C distributed Guidelines for Utilizing Emergency Medical Helicopters to all its construction sites as a practical response measure for preventing serious accidents and ensuring a swift response during the golden hour of an emergency. This guide, which contains detailed information on the criteria for medevac helicopter dispatch, request procedures, and response measures for different types of accidents, was produced in collaboration with related agencies such as the National Fire Agency and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Based on this, Hyundai E&C plans to actively expand and put in place a safety management system designed for construction sites by producing and distributing an emergency patient transport manual and training videos, and by conducting regular training sessions for site health managers.

The company also recently launched the ‘365 Safety Patrol Team,’ which is stepping up safety inspections at all sites to proactively eliminate potential hazards. In addition to these efforts, the company is not only promoting worker-centric, voluntary, and proactive safety management practices through the mobile safety and health management platform H-Safety Wallet, but is also expanding various forms of support for its partner companies to create a safe and pleasant working environment. This includes providing safety and health consulting for partner companies and offering incentives to partners with outstanding safety management initiatives.
