Hyundai E&C Awarded a 1.4 Trillion Won Contract to Build Hong Kong United Christian Hospital

The company received a letter of award (LOA) for the United Christian Church project from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority on July 27. The project ordered by Hong Kong Hospital Authority is to newly build an outpatient building with B3- Level 22 floors, an inpatient building with B4-Level 18 floors as well as annex buildings, covering a total site area of 32,000㎡ and total floor area of 221,880㎡. Its completion date is in 46 months after breaking ground in August this year. Hyundai E&C jointly landed the project worth 1.17 billion dollars (around 1.4 trillion Korean won), with the Hong Kong construction company Build King, with 30% stake for Hyundai. (350 million dollars or 420 billion won)

During this bidding, Hyundai E&C satisfied the basic design concept required by the client while presenting unique design and construction method corresponding to the future high-tech hospital, thereby receiving the highest score in the technology assessment results. Consulate General of South Korea in Hong Kong played an active role in supporting the bidding preparation process, and this latest project won in Hong Kong is all the more significant as it indicates the company’s re-entry into the Hong Kong market since its construction project for container terminal in 2004.

Hyundai E&C has carried out a total of 19 construction projects worth 2.4 billion dollars in Hong Kong alone, starting with the “Taiwo Housing Project-first phase” in 1986, followed by The New Kowloon Housing Development Project, and the second phase of HOK UN redevelopment project.

The hospital built by Hyundai E&C will be equipped with the latest technologies, providing healing-favorable environment taking in natural lights and reflective lights which are essential for patients, a negative pressure facility within the outpatient zone to prevent in-hospital contamination, and energy-savings using photovoltaics. In particular, Hyundai has a proven track record of constructing landmark hospitals worldwide, thereby obtaining “BCA Green Mark”, one of the world’s top three-eco-friendly certifications, and winning the “Gold” segment at the Universal Design Awards.

Starting with the 121st U.S. military evacuation hospital in Yongsan in 1971, Hyundai E&C holds the construction records of building Korea's leading general hospitals, including Catholic Seoul St. Mary's Hospital and Asan Medical Center. In the overseas market, it is the only Korean builder with the construction records of about 50 hospitals in Korea and abroad, including Singapore's Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Changi General Hospital, Saudi Jubail Hospital and Riyadh King Fahd Medical City, Qatar’s Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City.

An official of Hyundai E&C said, "This order is a great achievement amidst the poor environment with the volume of overseas projects dwindling. Since Hyundai E&C has re-entered the Hong Kong market in 16 years, we will leverage our proven hospital construction technology and know-how to complete a world-leading hospital”, adding that “Hyundai E&C holds various hospital records at home and abroad, and we are focusing on the capacity of overseas orders, including hospital projects. Going forward, we will leverage our leading technology and solid track record to enhance our status as a global top-tier company.”
