Let’s take a closer look at smart construction technologies of Hyundai E&C by playing quizzes.
Data-based construction management
Q This is aimed at decreasing risks through simulations of construction sites. This converts 2D design drawings into 3D modeling and manages building information in an integrated way, leading to the improvement of design quality and profitability, the minimization of construction errors and the systematic maintenance of construction projects. What is this?
Answer BIM(Building Information Modeling)
BIM refers to a digital platform which manages the planning, design, construction, maintenance and disposal of structures in an integrated way based on 3D information models. BIM became in the limelight as it was used to design the National Museum of Qatar inspired by the desert sand rose. The three-dimensional design using BIM made it possible to build the imposing, majestic structure with the beauty of flowing lines. Hyundai E&C made use of BIM to build atypical structures and infrastructure such as the Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, the National Museum of Qatar and Kuwait's Sheikh Jaber Causeway. BIM is currently applied to the builder’s other construction sites including the Daegu Center of National Information Resources Service and the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway Section 14: Godeok Bridge. |
Q This digital project management platform, developed to increase efficiency of plant construction, enables the effective management of plant projects by integrating massive data produced throughout the entire process ranging from design and procurement to construction. BIM is used for building and infrastructure construction, and this is utilized for plant construction. What is this?
Answer AWP(Advanced Work Packaging)
AWP (Advanced Work Package) was designed to establish IWP (Installation Work Package) and connect data on design drawings, construction materials and construction in a three dimensional way to thoroughly confirm all the necessary issues for site management. AWP is effective in improving work efficiency, in that it enables users to divide the entire scope of construction and identify each status of design, procurement and construction by package. With an aim to increase productivity of plant construction, AWP was used at the construction sites of the Ethane Deep Recovery Facility in Usmania, Saudi Arabia, and the Marjan Increment Program in Saudi Arabia. This digital project management platform was recognized for its effectiveness in these construction sites as it could be utilized to review suitability of construction work plans, or system effectiveness, and conduct 3D simulations. |
Off-Site Construction
Q This is gaining attention as one of future construction methods. This technology was intended to modularize elements of buildings such as equipment, electricity and communication and to fabricate them in a manufacturing factory. With the introduction of this technology, a builder can simply set up frames of a building, transfer the modules already manufactured in a factory to the construction site and assembly them in place. What is this?
Answer MTP(Multi-Trade Prefabrication)
Modularization is gaining huge popularity in the construction industry due to its advantages such as less interference among workers, a decrease in construction period, uniformed quality, and safety assurance of construction works. MTP (Module Type Package), so-called the next-generation construction technology, refers to a construction method designed to fabricate construction elements regarding equipment, electricity and communication in a module factory and assembly them at a construction site. MTP is used mainly for the construction of hospitals and data centers which requires complex equipment and consists of various packages such as ceiling modules and dry wall modules, depending on the scope and site of module use. Starting with the Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, Hyundai E&C made effective use of MTP in its construction sites of the Catholic University of Korea, Bucheon ST. Mary’s Hospital and the Data Center in Busan. Other modularization technologies of Hyundai E&C include the PC (Precast Concrete) method in which concrete members are prefabricated and later assembled at a construction site, and the PPVC (Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction) method where independent, volume modules (referring to finished products with walls, floors and ceiling boards installed) manufactured in a factory are simply assembled at a construction site. |
Digital equipment
Q These two systems provide operators with work information through censors necessary for the movement, operation and control of construction heavy equipment. They can monitor information on positions of excavator buckets and angles of dozer blades in real time and half-automatically operate them. What are these?
Answer MG(Machine Guidance)/MC(Machine Control)
MG (Machine Guidance) informs operators of the positions, locations and working scopes of heavy equipment in real time when they operate excavators and bulldozers equipped with a variety of sensors and controllers, and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). It has been needed for assigned workers to mark and inform the depths and widths of excavation works according to design drawings, but MG excavators automatically show excavation-related information on the monitor, making it unnecessary to measure such information. With this equipment, an operator can conduct excavation works according to the information collected in advance, which contributes to decreasing construction costs and period, and risks of possible accidents. MC (Machine Control) is a more advanced technology compared to MG. MC can half-automatically control heavy equipment with precision by attaching GPS, inertial measurement sensors and hydraulic control units to the equipment. MG serves as an operation guide for heavy equipment operators, while MC is a half-automatic technology which can directly assist them in operating the equipment. |
Q This robotics technology is effective in improving the foundation of project management through untact, unmanned site management. Equipped with LiDAR, 360-degree cameras and GPS sensors, this can manage all around the corner of a construction site instead of workforce. What is this?
Answer Patrol UGV Robot
The use of robots can manage a construction site without workforce around the clock throughout the year. UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) robots collect information in real time without being influenced by working environments and time, and help those working at construction sites focus on engineering works, instead of simple site management. Notably, the varied sensors attached to UGV robots can enable integrated management of project sites using 3D BIM, site monitoring through AI image analysis, and detection of harmful gases in hazardous sections using IoT sensors. Hyundai E&C plans to take the lead in the development of construction-related robotics technologies by conducting trial applications of exoskeleton suits and quadruped walking robots. |
Smart site and safety management
Q Hyundai E&C developed this system for the first time in the domestic construction industry. This IoT-based safety management system is equipped with six technologies aimed to locate workers, prevent construction equipment from being jammed and tower cranes from collapsing, detect gas concentration, detect wind velocity, measure environmental information on weather, fine dust, vibration and noise, and identify and set off an alarm for cases of workers without personal protective equipment based on surveillance cameras. What is called this system?
Answer HIoS(Hyundai IoT Safety System)
Safety is considered a top priority in construction sites. Hyundai E&C developed its own safety management system HIoS, under which smart devices are attached to workers to monitor project sites in real time. HIoS refers to an integrated platform which collects information through a wide range of sensors and responds to it. BLE communication information is send to AP, a data collecting device, based on which HIoS determines whether risks exist and sets off an alarm to workers and managers. In addition, Hyundai E&C puts all-out efforts to increase safety and productivity of its workers by introducing an untact, thermal and facial recognition access management system called H-Gate, first of its kinds in the domestic construction industry, in a bid to prevent COVID-19 viruses from spreading in construction sites. |
