"I felt proud when I saw the selected foreign workers exerting their capabilities in the global field."
by Manager Gwak Dae-hyeon (Personnel Management Team)
Q Please tell us about your job.
I’m Manager Gwak Dae-hyeon in Personnel Management Team under the Human Resources Office. My main task is to calculate the appropriate number of people (quota) in the department and on-site and to allocate the personnel in the right place. I am also hiring the disabled and veterans.
Q When was the most rewarding moment during your work?
The most memorable moment is when I went to India on a business trip to hire foreigners to work at the Qatar Al Bustan Road Construction site as a rookie office worker. When I saw thousands of foreign job seekers who applied to work at Hyundai E&C, I realized once again that Hyundai E&C is a globally renowned company. I was very proud that the people I selected were put into appropriate locations around the world and played an important role.
Q What kind of competencies do you think you need to do your job?
First, I think logical thinking is key. In the process of pursuing our tasks, there are often situations where decisions need to be made, and you need a clear argument and strong evidence to persuade yourself and the other party.
Second, analytical thinking is also important. Detailed and multifaceted analysis capabilities are required in the process of creating the data necessary to understand the current situation, finding problems, and establishing appropriate solutions.
Third, competency in communication is critical because of the nature of the support department that collaborates a lot internally and externally. We must always listen carefully to the needs of the site and communicate through many conversations as we discuss ways to effectively provide support.
Q Is there a corporate culture of Hyundai E&C that you are very proud of?
Hyundai E&C sets the second and fourth Friday of every month as “Family Day,” encouraging all employees to leave work at 5 o’clock. If you have an engagement on a Friday evening or are going on a weekend trip, it’s very nice to have that early time off. I love that we can avoid the rush hour commute on busy workdays.
Also, we hold “standing meetings” for 10 to 15 minutes before going home. Since each team gathers and holds meetings while everyone is standing, the meeting ends faster. The advantage is that you can talk in a more relaxed atmosphere. It is also a time to warmly encourage each other after finishing work, praising the hard work for the day.
Q Could you say a word to juniors who dream of working at Hyundai E&C?
Since Hyundai E&C is a site-oriented company, everyone works at the site once after joining the company. Work is actively rotated between the head office and the site, and there is frequent movement of assignments between sites. If you are a talented person who adapts well to the new environment and integrates smoothly with the organization, you will be satisfied with working at Hyundai E&C.
Also, at Hyundai E&C, the current employees visit their alma mater and have time to chat with their juniors every year. I believe it will be of great help in joining Hyundai E&C if you actively participate in those sessions and learn a lot of information.
I’ll be cheering you on until the day you proudly join Hyundai E&C and work with me.
