On March 9th, Hyundai E&C and Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the practical application and advancement of smart construction technology.


The signing ceremony was held at the KEC R&D headquarters located in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggido. The ceremony attended by Kim Ki-beom, head of the Infrastructure Division of Hyundai E&C, and Cho Sung-min, head of Center for Smart Construction Technology of KEC and related executives and held in the orders of the Center’s progress update presentation, smart technology application presentation and signing of the agreement.


Under the agreement, Hyundai E&C will actively cooperate with the Center for Smart Construction Technology(KEC) for the development and practical use of smart construction technology, including the provision of demonstration, whereas the Center for Smart Construction Technology(KEC) will actively support consultation with the relevant agencies for the on-site application and practical use of smart construction technologies.


Hyundai E&C, as smart construction leader, has secured and assigned professional workforce by technology to each business division and R&D center to identify and develop relevant technologies. It has selected numerous smart construction innovation sites to integrate and demonstrate new technologies and rapidly deploy them on site, accelerating innovations in the construction sector.


The KEC’s Center for Smart Construction Technology is the agency supervising the overall smart construction technology R&D projects through road demonstration, promoting digital transformation of the construction industry through onsite application of the developed smart construction technologies and supporting the global expansion of the Korean construction sector leveraging its accumulated digital expertise.

KEC and Hyundai E&C have shown a lot of synergy through cooperation in smart construction even before the signing of the latest MOU.

Numerous smart construction technologies including digital drawings, VR/AR including the BIM collaboration platform have been applied to the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway Section 14, one of Hyundai E&C’s smart construction innovation sites, by collaborating with the KEC’s Super Long Span Bridge R&D Center, and in November last year, the said site’s promotion hall successfully held Hyundai E&C Smart Construction Technology Demonstration.


Moreover, during the BIM Award 2020 co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and buildingSMARTKorea(bSK), the BIM-based Cable Bridge Construction Support System jointly presented by Hyundai E&C, KEC Super Long Span Bridge R&D Center, and Korea Infra BIM Cooperative won the Excellence Award in the general [civil engineering] category, drawing keen attention to the latest signed MOU, which will accelerate cooperation in the smart construction sector. 


An official of Hyundai E&C said, “Hyundai E&C continues to strengthen its R&D investment and win-win cooperation system for the early adoption of smart construction technologies”, adding that, “the MOU signed with the Center for Smart Construction Technology of KEC will allow Hyundai E&C to lead the development and practical application of smart construction technologies.”

An official of KEC explained that "through this MOU, we will accelerate the practical use of smart construction technologies by developing and demonstrating technologies linked to Hyundai E&C’s demonstration sites from the start of the research,” adding that, “it will be an occasion to promote the digital transformation of the construction sector.”
