  HYUNDAI E&C 79 79 YEARS ANNIVERSARY

On May 25, 1947, a sign reading "Hyundai Togun" went up outside a small office in Jung-gu, Seoul. In the 28,855 days since, Hyundai E&C has cut roads through deserts once thought impossible, built world-class bridges across rough seas, and reshaped city skylines time and again. Now, on its 79th anniversary, we trace that journey through data.

Since opening the door to overseas expansion with the Pattani–Narathiwat Highway in Thailand in 1965, Hyundai E&C has extended its reach across the globe, notably with the construction of the Jubail Industrial Port in the 1970s - a project hailed as the "Miracle of the Middle East." The trust earned across 902 projects in 62 countries has translated into a record $150 billion in cumulative overseas orders, a first for a South Korean construction company. Building on the technical expertise it demonstrated in the Middle East and Asia, Hyundai E&C is now accelerating into the future energy market, expanding its next-generation nuclear and renewable energy businesses across North America and Europe.

Hyundai E&C’s competitive edge lies not simply in “construction technology,” but in “technology that sets the standard.” The technical expertise has accumulated by solving challenges on real-world construction sites, along with the intellectual property developed by systematizing that expertise serves as the core driving force behind Hyundai E&C’s future. Hundreds of patents and dozens of new technology certifications demonstrate that this expertise has been proven in actual construction environments. Hyundai E&C’s technology is setting new standards across every aspect of design, construction, safety, and quality. Its No. 1 ranking in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Technical Capability Evaluation for four consecutive years stands as a testament to this competitiveness.

Hyundai E&C has played a pivotal role in the history of South Korea’s power industry, laying the foundation for everyday life. Its track record of constructing 24 Korean-type large nuclear power units, with a total capacity of 26,416 MW*, both in Korea and overseas, demonstrates Hyundai E&C’s overwhelming technical capabilities. This capacity is approximately three times** the amount of electricity consumed by all households in Korea in a single month. In other words, a significant share of the electricity lighting our surroundings at this very moment was made possible by Hyundai E&C. Together with its experience in building mega-scale energy infrastructure, including refining, petrochemical, and gas plants, Hyundai E&C has established unrivaled competitiveness in the global EPC market. This strength is now expanding into future energy businesses such as offshore wind, solar power, and hydrogen fuel cells. Hyundai E&C’s renewable energy generation track record, totaling approximately 982 MW**, demonstrates that the company continues to maintain its competitiveness in the era of energy transition. This capacity is equivalent to the electricity consumed by approximately 3 million*** households in Korea for one month, underscoring that Hyundai E&C is not only ensuring a stable power supply, but also actively preparing for the future energy transition.

*Nuclear power total capacity = construction capacity based on projects that have begun construction (Korea Atomic Industrial Forum)

**Total new and renewable energy capacity = all generation sources, including installed electrical capacity, based on projects that have begun construction

**Calculation: A simple conversion based on maximum power generation, using the average household electricity consumption of 240 kWh and approximately 25 million households in Korea, according to Korea Electric Power Statistics (2025)

In 1975, Hyundai E&C built the Apgujeong Hyundai Apartments on the sandy fields of Gangnam. The heritage that first set the standard for apartment living in Korea - through high-rise design and systematic complex planning - lives on today in Hillstate and THE H. Having supplied more than 520,000 housing units nationwide over the past 64 years, Hyundai E&C has proven its strength in leading the transformation of Korea's residential culture. Its standing as the annual No. 1 in urban redevelopment and reconstruction orders every year since 2019 culminated in a historic milestone in 2025, when its annual order amount surpassed KRW 10 trillion for the first time. And now, Hyundai E&C stands before Apgujeong once again. Beginning with Apgujeong District 2 and extending to District 3, the largest of the districts, the company is once more designing the next 100 years of residential life in Korea - reaching beyond the housing standard it set half a century ago.

The history of the infrastructure built by Hyundai E&C is, in essence, the “evolution of connectivity.” Beginning with the restoration of the Samhyeon Bridge in 1951, the company has completed a total of 93 bridges, connecting the world across national borders. In Saudi Arabia, over the past half-century since 1978, Hyundai E&C has constructed power transmission lines spanning half the Earth’s equator, creating the energy arteries that fuel the nation’s industry.  Now, Hyundai E&C's infrastructure is advancing toward connecting the invisible flow of information. From NAVER Data Center GAK Sejong to the Pacific Sunny Data Center in Yongin Jukjeon, Hyundai E&C is building the “heart that never sleeps”, which keeps our digital lives running 24/7, through a total of 17 projects (equivalent to 508 MW) - the largest track record among Korean builders.

Wherever Hyundai E&C lays the groundwork for new communities around the world, the future of the local community grows alongside it. Overseas, Hyundai E&C has helped build the foundation for self-sustaining growth by supporting improvements in education and sanitation environments in communities near major project sites, including the Matarbari Power Plant in Bangladesh, the Jinja Bridge in Uganda, and the South Commuter Railway Project in the Philippines. In Korea as well, Hyundai E&C continues to serve as a dependable support for children by providing disaster safety helmets and safety education to elementary schools near project sites, including Busan Port Jinhae New Port and the Waseong District this year. Beyond these site-linked initiatives, 11,680 hours of steady volunteer service demonstrate that Hyundai E&C’s commitment to sharing is not temporary. Leaving hope behind even after the construction site has moved on - that is the sincerity of win-win growth that Hyundai E&C has upheld for 79 years.

Our 79-year history is not an endpoint, but a new beginning. Building on the solid foundation we have established in large nuclear power plants, adding innovation in renewable energy, and expanding our long-standing expertise in infrastructure development into the future industry of data centers, Hyundai E&C continues to broaden its horizons. A challenge that continuously connects the values the times demand and never stops evolving: this is why Hyundai E&C's next 79 years are all the more worth the wait.
